What is LMIA Work Permit?
The Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) Work Permit is a type of Canadian work permit that allows employers to hire foreign workers to fill positions that cannot be filled by Canadian citizens or permanent residents. The LMIA requires employers to demonstrate that they have attempted to hire Canadians and permanent residents before hiring a foreign worker.
If an employer is able to do so, the Government of Canada will then issue a positive LMIA to the foreign worker, allowing them to apply for a work permit. In some cases, a foreign worker may be exempt from needing an LMIA and may be able to apply for a work permit directly. This is often the case for high-skilled foreign workers who have been offered a job in Canada or foreign workers who enter Canada under an international agreement such as NAFTA.
